Journal 63 Sewing, Ikea Haul, Quicksand, Icebox Cake
It‘s a relief that the Iran-Israel war ended. But the killing and hunger in Gaza needs to stop.
A short while ago I finally did some sewing. I have not made anything from scratch yet, but I started mending things from my big “mendable” pile. I started with a shirt that had a loose hem. Haha, it did not come out as neat as I wanted, so I might research sewing techniques. Also, matching thread would help. But the obvious mend is actually kind of cute.
Recently I also got a sizable chunk of my Ikea haul! Yay! I purchased more Rast dressers. The single one has been so cute, I really like it. The design is so simple and clean. But it will be hard to find the time to assemble everything. I have a backlog of all kinds of new items to process. Little by little though, with each completed project, we are getting closer to sanity.
If I could go back in time and tell a younger me, or tell another person in the same situation, about what to do if they go back to live in their family home (but plan to move to their own home very soon) is this:
UNDERSTAND THAT YOU ARE IN QUICKSAND. YOU MUST GET OUT LIKE YOU WOULD OUT OF QUICKSAND!
Act like you are going to live there for ten years.
Not ten months, not ten weeks, not ten days. Whatever you do, don’t let it stay the same. I let it stay the same because I was afraid that it would mean I was permanently settling in. Even after five years I refused. But this ended up hurting me because the house drove me crazy. By giving me a negative attitude, it may have even negatively affected my chances of finding a home. In the areas my partner and I controlled, we should have made them as close to our idea of a home as possible.
Over the years I did improve many parts of the house, but it did not work out.
Well, in this super hot weather, I have been enjoying... icebox cake! I was craving a cool, tarty, sweet, creamy icebox cake so badly. We finally made one, then another, playing with different layering and fruit additions. My current favorite is strawberry. The next one we will try with pistachio pudding and apricots.
Ours were not from a recipe, but here is a recipe that is very close to what we did for my favorite version:

Thank you for reading about my happenings.
I wish you a happy week!
